Preparing Your Home For Hurricanes

Hurricane season will be here very soon. You will need to start making preparations for hurricane season now. Here are some tips for getting your home ready:

Build An Emergency Kit

You and your family members may be without electricity and water for a few days if a hurricane occur. Help may not arrive for a few days. Fortunately, an emergency makes it easier to survive. An emergency kit needs to have water bottles, non-perishable food items, first aid supplies, blankets, batteries and flashlights. If someone in your family takes medication, then the medicine should be placed in the kit also.

Your emergency kit will need to be in a place where you can easily get to it. Supplies will also need to be regularly updated.

Make An Evacuation Plan

In many cases, government officials encourage people to leave the area before a hurricane. You will need to create an evacuation plan. Choose a place to go if you have to leave town and select a route to take. If you plan on staying with a family member or friend outside of town, then you will need to contact them ahead of time. Make sure that you stay tuned to the news if a hurricane watch has been issued for your area.

Bring Your Outdoor Items Inside

If a hurricane watch has been issued in your area, then you will need to bring outside items in the house. This includes things like decorations, outdoor furniture, garbage cans. Anything that cannot be tied down should not be left outdoors.

Cover The Windows

You may want to install permanent storm shutters on your windows. Permanent storm shutters are one of the best options for protecting your home’s windows. Keep in mind that putting tape on the windows will not stop them from breaking.
